Disability Sport and Recreation
Sports CONNECT
A national framework, coordinated by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), delivering a range of programs that increase opportunities for people with a disability to participate in sport and physical recreation. Participation can include:
- playing sport
- administration
- volunteering
- coaching
- officiating
Sport and Recreation Services is the ASCs partner agency for the delivery of Sports CONNECT in the ACT.
Key programs of the Sports CONNECT framework are:
Sports Ability
An exciting inclusive games program developed by the ASC. The program has two key aims:
- to provide people delivering sport or physical activities with more ways of including people with disability
- to provide a means for people with and without disability to interact in a sporting environment

Sports Ability Kits
Sport and Recreation Services have Sports Ability packs available for hire to schools, disability service providers and other interested organisations.

Sports CONNECT HUBs
Sports CONNECT HUBs have been developed to provide a community venue for people of all ages and abilities to participate in sport and structured physical activities in a safe, inclusive and fun environment.
Sports CONNECT HUBs;
- Offer inclusive competitive or non-competitive games
- Have adapted sports equipment
- Have trained staff that deliver sport activities
- Are accessible venues

Disability Education Program
Education and training is a key component of the Sports CONNECT framework and supports the promotion of a physically active lifestyle for all Australians, including Australians with disability. Education and training is currently delivered through the Disability Education Program (DEP) and provides participants with training and resource material to increase knowledge and skills in adapting and modifying activities to include people with a disability.

If you would like advice and/or assistance on inclusive sport and recreation activities available in the ACT; how to include people with a disability in your sport and recreation programs; or assistance with linking to disability service providers to develop partnerships and better promote programs then please contact Sport and Recreation Services (SRS).
SRS can also assist in the promotion of your events and programs to the sport, recreation and disability sectors; as well as providing inclusion training for sport and recreation organisations, clubs, coaches, development officers and administrators.

Webinars
The Sports CONNECT Webinar series is all about helping you provide more opportunities for people with disability to participate in sport and active recreation. It is a part of the Australian Sports Commissions national Sports CONNECT initiative. Sports CONNECT works across the sports sector, providing support to a wide range of sports at national, state and local level. The basic aim of Sports CONNECT is to connect sports organisations and disability sector organisations to create sustainable opportunities.
