ACT Government Economic Development Directorate
Environment and Sustainability
As part of the 'Committed to Canberra' concept, the Department of Land and Property Services has a range of project environmental initiatives and internal initiatives.
National Framework for Sustainable Government Office Buildings
Governments, as prime users of office space across Australia, are well placed to improve the performance of their building stock by adopting sustainable practices. ACT Property Group within the Department is actively involved through its membership of the national Government Property Group in the development of a National Framework for Sustainable Government Office Buildings. The Framework provides a set of principles that will assist State and Territory governments in implementing initiatives to reduce the impact of office buildings on the natural environment.
National Green Leasing Policy
The Australian, State and Territory governments through their property groups and environment departments are working together to drive lasting environmental improvements in the operation of buildings through government leasing. The National Green Leasing Policy is the first nationally consistent approach to capitalise on this opportunity.
This Policy facilitates environmentally beneficial practices and outcomes associated with the leasing of buildings, through the use of a Green Lease Schedule. It provides guidance and information for a collaborative approach to improve operational performance. This policy sets target performance standards (which individual jurisdictions may elect to exceed) and it outlines the requirements of building owners and government tenants. These standards and requirements will be implemented by individual governments through their respective legal and policy frameworks and the use of appropriate Green Leasing tools and instruments that are to be developed with due regard to the principles set out in this Policy.
ACT Government Real Estate Policy
Developed by ACT Property Group, the ACT Government Real Estate Policy (GREP) is updated regularly to ensure that the management and use of Government real estate incorporates the principles of ecologically sustainable development.
In addition to implementing national initiatives such as the National Green Leasing Policy and the National Framework for Sustainable Government Office Buildings, the GREP (
155 kb) contains its own set of guidelines and procedures to assist agencies meet the Government's sustainability objectives, as described in the document 'Weathering the Change'.![]()
Within the Department
We have registered with the ACT Department of Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water
to have our waste management facilities assessed through the ACT Business Smart Program
following on from the success of the Land Development Agency (LDA) which recently received its accreditation and award at the Inaugural ACTSmart Recycling Awards.![]()
By improving its waste management practices the LDA has significantly reduced the amount of waste going to landfill with 85 per cent of its waste now recycled.
The ACT Department of Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water (DECCEW) runs the programs which have been implemented in hundreds of sites across the Territory.
